Theory A sociological perspective also helps you to understand how the health services where you will be working are shaped by societal issues. The topic of your lecture in week 3 and your second tutorial in week 4 was Bio-power and Medical Dominance: Knowledge, Power and Discourse. In week 1’s lecture you were introduced to the approach of cultural safety and cultural safety was the topic of the lecture in week 4. Tutorials in weeks 2, 8, 10 and 12 specifically focused on cultural safety while other tutorials had material suggesting the need for cultural safety. Your tasks: * Firstly identify 2 key assumptions underlying biomedical dominance. *Assess each one against the principals of cultural safety and give your argument as to whether they support or diminish culturally safe practice. *Drawing on published sources (e.g. your required readings and other articles) discuss how biomedical dominance shapes health services in Australia using the 2 assumptions you identified as examples ——Your answer must use relevant literature to support your arguments. L01, L03, LO4—- B Background In your lectures in week 4 we discussed cultural safety and in week 5 we discussed racism. In tutorials in week 6 we discussed racism and in week 12 we discussed inclusion/exclusion, white privilege and cultural safety. Theory Taylor and Guerin (2012, p. 79) state: “There is a large and growing body of research relating to the concept of whiteness. It fits well with the theme of cultural safety because the focus is on ‘white’ people considering how ‘white’ culture and position in society affects them and those around them”. LO2, LO4 —– B Background You were introduced to the concept of cultural safety in week 1 lectures. We discussed it more fully in week 4 and in tutorials in weeks 8, 10 and 12. Cultural safety is a philosophy underlying nursing practice that recognizes the interactions between culture and society and between these and health/nursing care. Cultural safety is widely applicable in all nursing contexts as it uses reflective practices to encourage ‘self’ rather than ‘other’ awareness. Theory There are 13 assumptions underlying the philosophy of cultural safety outlined by Eckermann et al. (2010, p. 185). Your Task: *Develop, name and describe three (3) personal learning goals relating to cultural safety that you aim to achieve before graduating with your degree. *Each of your goals must show that you have applied some of the assumptions described by Eckermann (2010) underlying the philosophy of cultural safety in developing your goals. LO2 —– B Background and theory In the lecture in week 10 we discussed the sociology of sex, gender and sexuality, and how these impact on health for communities and individuals. Willis and Elmer (2011, p. 122) argue that ‘health experiences and health outcomes for men and women are different’.
