Part 1: Analyse the scenario of the public health leader, presented in the Australian public health context using the Australian Health Leadership Framework [1000 words]
(Australian Health Leadership Framework: https://www.aims.org.au/documents/item/352 )
In this scenario – you need to make your own assessments as to what could be happening in the context, up to a reasonable degree, based on the information. It cannot be based on your ‘perceptions’ – but has to be grounded in your understanding of the context of Australia. The whole idea is to understand the context well, then think about applying this scenario to the framework.
So for example, based on the scenario, how is Helen ‘leading self’, ‘engaging others’, ‘achieves outcomes’, ‘drives innovation’ and ‘shapes systems’. You need to apply some thoughts, some assumptions (which are stated clearly at the onset), and then do the analysis.
Part 2: Undertake a self-assessment using the Leadership self-assessment tool [500 words]
https://www.leadershipacademy.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/NHSLeadership-Framework-LeadershipFrameworkSelfAssessmentTool.pdf. Summarise your results.
This is where you self-evaluate your leadership strength using the tool. Summarise the findings.
Part 3: Imagine yourself to be in the situation. Reflect on your leadership style, its strengths, and apply them to this scenario. How would you have responded to the situation based on the self-evaluation in part 2? Where do you see the gaps in your profile? Prepare an action plan. [500 words]
You need to imagine yourself in the shoes of Helen in the given scenario. You have done your self-evaluation using the leadership tool and you have your results. You need to think about where are your gaps in public health leadership.
So for example, in part 1, ‘leading self’ – would come from ‘demonstrating personal qualities’ in part 2. ‘engaging others’ in Part 1 would be relating to ‘working with others assessment’ in part 2 – and so on. Your self-assessment will reflect on your strengths and weaknesses and you need tosummarise the gaps with an action plan.
